End the Siege of Gaza now!

By: Stewart Brennan

If you are a human being that abides by moral human values then you must speak out against the atrocities being committed on the children in all nations. Otherwise your silence allows the atrocities to continue…I ask everyone with a moral conscious to contact their political representative as I have and call them out on these issues…let us find out who is indeed a human being or who is a Sociopath…I certainly will not vote for a sociopath would you? I don’t want mere words, I want real concrete action taken on crimes against humanity. End the Siege of Gaza NOW!

Here are the links you can use to get in touch with your government representative in Canada & the USA. I also encourage those from other countries to send their government representative a letter and call them out to the plight of the Palestinian people. Please feel free to use my letter and share this post with others. We need to take action around the world to make these atrocities stop!

Contact your Government Representative!

Here is my letter to my member of the Canadian Parliament:

Mr: Scarpaleggia

(Member of Parliament for Lac Ste Louis & Chair / President of the National Liberal Caucus)

Why do Canadian politicians stay quiet about the siege of Gaza where 1.7 million people are without the basics to sustain human life?

The siege of Gaza is nothing more than a crime against humanity by Israel and must be stopped right now! I’m really FN sick of Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestine as any moral human being should be. I’m tired of politicians backing a regime in Israel that holds onto the holocaust but are excused for committing a holocaust on the Palestinian people. I’m outraged! How would you like it if your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were trapped with no way in or out on a sliver of land where lifelines have been completely severed? Food, fuel, building materials, and everything else required to sustain life are blocked by an Israeli Gestapo like regime…the children are freezing to death right now because of the blockade!! Do you support these Israeli crimes Mr Scarpaleggia? If you don’t support crimes against humanity and abide by the UN declaration of human rights, what will you do to bring attention to this outrageous situation?! If you need information to be brought up to speed on this situation, I can certainly supply it...

I anxiously await your reply

Convicted of genocide Israel prepares new Holocaust

A Palestinian woman is helped by a paramedic out of her building, damaged during an Israeli air raid in Gaza City, November 19, 2012

By: Kevin Barrett

Source: Press TV

On November 25, Judge Yunus of the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal found Israel guilty of genocide.

Israel’s response: accelerate the genocide.

The Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip has crippled Gaza’s main power plant for more than a month - and it’s getting worse. The power outage has wrecked Gaza’s waste water treatment system and flooded the streets with raw sewage.

According to the head of the UN Humanitarian News Agency, Israel is effectively destroying “all essential services, including hospitals, clinics, sewage and water pumping stations.” The New York Times states, “The sanitation department may soon no longer be able to pump drinking water to Gaza homes.”

The Gaza Strip is the world’s most densely populated urban area. Some call it the world’s biggest concentration camp. Surrounded by barbed wire and Israeli guards, residents cannot escape. As it loses drinking water and is flooded with sewage - and as the Israeli puppet regime of al-Sisi shuts down the life-supporting tunnels to the Sinai - Gaza is on the brink of becoming an extermination camp.

But killing the Palestinians slowly by depriving them of essential services may not satisfy the Zionists. Alan Hart, the former lead Mideast correspondent for the BBC and back-channel peace emissary, thinks the Israelis may be planning a false flag operation that would trigger a new, larger version of the 1948 Palestinian Holocaust.

During a recent Truth Jihad Radio interview, Hart told me, “On present form, I think there will be a final Zionist ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Because the whole Zionist game plan has been to make life hell for the Palestinians of the occupied territories. But they’ve nowhere to go and they aren’t going to pack up and go. So when it dawns on Israel’s leaders, as it will, that the demographic time bomb is ticking, and they can’t bring on-stream a puppet Palestinian government that will accept crumbs from Zionism’s table, then there will be the final ethnic cleansing. And it can happen very easily. You get six Mossad agents dressed as Palestinian terrorists and kill thirty, forty, fifty Jews or whatever. And that’s it. Away you go... an internal Israel-Palestine false flag operation.”

Hart believes this scenario of an “internal false flag operation” followed by a final ethnic cleansing is realistic and likely to happen sooner or later. Less probable, but still a danger, is an “external false flag operation” - an attack on America designed to be blamed on Iran in order to draw the US into another war for Israel.

The author and Mideast expert explained:

“I don’t think there’ll be war (with Iran) because that has always been a bluff by Netanyahu. We know that most of his military and intelligence people are against it, unless they could somehow bring America in. But one can never rule out the possibility of an Israeli false flag operation, something dreadful that they would seek to blame on Iran. I’m not predicting it. I don’t think it’s likely. But I’m afraid you can’t rule out anything. Because it is now a desperate game for Zionism. Because (the Iran nuclear agreement) would mark the first-ever really big defeat for the Zionist lobby. And as I said, it would free up Obama to be serious about Israel-Palestine.”

Hart explained that the Zionists are most dangerous when backed into a corner:

“I think apart from a false flag operation, Netanyahu has shot himself in the foot.”

Alan Hart is a respected Mideast analyst, who was a personal friend of both PLO leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. He has known American presidents and European prime ministers, and served them during his years as a back-channel peace negotiator. When someone of Alan Hart’s stature issues such dire warnings, they deserve to be taken seriously at the highest levels.

Hart says that US President Jimmy Carter once admitted to him that Israel has terrorized and paralyzed the US government by threatening to unleash mayhem if the US tries to force it to make peace. Since Israel has hundreds of nuclear weapons, and is said to be able to target Europe and possibly the US, such seemingly bizarre, reckless threats are unfortunately quite serious. The Israelis, it seems, are afflicted by some sort of collective madness.

Hart recounted one of his meetings with Israeli Defense Minister Ezer Weizman, who was visibly shaken by something. Hart asked what was wrong.

Hart told me what Weizman said, “‘This lunchtime, Sharon convened a meeting of many senior military officers, and they had signed a blood oath that in the event of any Israeli government withdrawing from the occupied territories, those who had signed the oath would take the men loyal to them, join forces with the settlers who would oppose the implementation of any withdrawal, and fight their own government to the death.’ Now when Ezer told me that story, he looked at me and he said, ‘Do you think Sharon would do that?’ And I said, ‘Ezer, I’m a visiting goy! You’re Israel’s Defense Minister! What do youthink?’ And he said, ‘Of course he would. He’s mad enough to nuke the entire ---- Arab world.’ Quote-unquote. So yes, there’s madness and madness.”

It is time for the world to come together and put an end to the madness of Zionism, before the madness of Zionism puts the world in trouble.

Japanese Govt rams state secrets bill through lower house to cover up Nuclear Disasters at Fukushima

Japan’s lower house has passed a heavy-handed state secrets act despite fears that it will have severe repercussions for state freedoms. Officials will now face a maximum punishment of ten years in prison if they are found to have leaked to the press.

Japan’s Diet (parliament) passed the bill, which is aimed at expanding the definition of a state secret and place increasing penalties upon anyone deemed a leaker. The move will apparently prevent media accessing information on four sensitive areas: defense, diplomacy, counter-terrorism and counter-espionage.

The information will be further divided into 23 types. Top officials from all departments would have the power to declare issues ‘secret’. The ‘secrets’ could then be kept classified for up to 60 years.

Journalists and other private sector parties could also receive up to five years imprisonment if they are found to be using ‘grossly inappropriate’ means to acquire information.

Such restrictions could spill over into the nuclear industry. The topic is particularly sensitive in the face of March 2011’s Fukushima nuclear disaster, which drove over 160,000 residents from their homes.

“Information on the vulnerability of nuclear power plants could be classified as special secrets, along with plans on how to guard the plants,”Yutaka Saito, a lawyer and a member of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations' task force on the bill, told Reuters

If so, anyone who has blown the whistle from the inside to warn of the danger of nuclear power plants will be punished,”Saito said.

The bill was adopted through majority vote by the ruling coalition after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), New Komeito, and the Opposition Your Party all agreed to revisions last week to gain the votes of small conservative opposition parties.

The move comes despite overwhelming public opposition, and after members of opposition parties - including the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), the Japan Restoration Party, the Japanese Communist Party and the People's Life Party – said that insufficient debate had been conducted prior to the vote. Critics allege that changes to the bill were merely cosmetic, and requested that it not be brought to vote. Regardless, the legislation was approved after only a few hours worth of delay

Nearly 63 percent of respondents to a Kyodo news agency survey expressed concerns about the bill last week, and its discussion triggered protests by hundreds of people outside of parliament on Tuesday. Thousands gathered in a Tokyo park the previous week to rally against the bill.

“We revised the proposal as much as possible to address the concerns held by the public,” Gen Nakatani, an LDP director, said following the vote, while Atsushi Oshima, a DPJ director declared that it had been a “defeat for the legislative branch.”

The bill has now been sent to the Diet’s Upper House for consideration, where it will likely pass without any difficulty. The LDP and its junior partner hold a solid majority in both houses.

“Clearly, there will be a chilling effect on access to a wide range of information,”
said Meiji University law professor, Lawrence Repeta, said. “It is clearly aimed at news media to block reporting in a way that may be critical of the government on a wide range of sensitive issues,” he added.

Abe has stated that the law is vital in the development of a US-style National Security Council to coordinate foreign policy and security while negotiating with allies such as the US over the possible sharing of information.

“My biggest concern is that it would be more difficult for the people to see the government's decision-making process,” said Kyouji Yanagisawa, a former defense official who was in charge of national security in the Prime Minister's Office in 2004-2009. “That means we can't check how or where the government made mistakes, or help the government make a wise decision
.”

Presentation Transcript:

Special thanks to the Samuel Lawrence Foundation for creating and underwriting these post Fukushima Daiichi events.

More importantly, today’s gathering would not be necessary if Federal and State policy makers and business executives believed that Fukushima Daiichi really happened. If they had believed what they saw on television, they would understand that nuclear accidents happen. Nuclear accidents are inevitable. They would understand that “Sooner or later, in any foolproof system, the fools are going to exceed the proofs!”

Indian Point presents an interesting dichotomy. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) claims that the chance of a meltdown is one in a million. With 400 operating nuclear reactors worldwide, the NRC data means one meltdown would occur every 2,500 years. The NRC bases this analysis on a technique called Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA- pray for short). On old plants like Pilgrim and Indian Point, the NRC uses data from newer plants to show how reliable these plants will be to continue if they operate for the next 20-years. That’s like my doctor telling me how long I will live based on the heath statistics for 25-year-olds. If we apply the NRC’s methodology, the probability of what happened at Fukushima Daiichi is one million x million x million (a 1 with eighteen zeros) to one.

But that is not what has happened in real life. Instead, history shows us that there have been five meltdowns during the last 35 years: TMI, Chernobyl, and Fukushima Daiichi 1, 2, and 3 (apologies for not including Windscale, Santa Susana, and about a dozen more reactors). The real numbers show that there is a seven-year frequency between meltdowns. Policy makers and business interests are ignoring history as they attempt to force the relicensure of Indian Point.

While demanding that taxpayers cover the risk of a nuclear accident by paying for the Price-Anderson nuclear insurance, it seems that the NRC and every major politician and nuclear fabricator actually believes that A Nuclear Accident Can’t Happen at Indian Point or Pilgrim. When someone’s brain reasons in a way to justify support for what it wants to be true, psychologists call it “Motivated Reasoning”.

Recently I was asked to testify to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission because the Pickering Nuclear reactors have applied to operate beyond their useful life. Pickering is located only 20 miles away from the heart of Toronto. At the hearing in Toronto, speaker after speaker implored the CNSC to keep this aged nuclear plant running because it is a major employer that pays its taxes. They said that Pickering Nuclear Power Plant has great employees who live in town, who are on the school board, on the soccer teams, or sing in local church choirs. The statements suggested that surely, such nice people would know if their plant was unsafe.

This situation reminds me of Garrison Keillor and his tales about Lake Woebegone, where he would say, “…all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.” Every town I visit that has a nuclear plant believes its nuclear plant is better than average. If history has taught us anything, it’s that nuclear accidents happen despite the best intentions of the men and women who work there.

I knew the operators at Three Mile Island, they were active in their community and they lived near the plant, yet an accident happened. Nuclear Power is a technology that can have 40 good years and one bad day.

After the Chernobyl accident, I got to know some of the operators there, and they were brilliant engineers who were very safety conscious. They and their families lived very near to the Chernobyl reactor, and still an accident happened. This is a technology that can have forty good years and one bad day.

After I wrote my book Fukushima Daiichi: The Truth And The Future, I got to know some of the Fukushima Daiichi operators. Like the operators at TMI and Chernobyl, they too were meticulous and knew their reactor like a book. They also lived right near the Daiichi plants with their families. And yet, another accident happened. Nuclear Power is a technology that can have forty good years of operation and one very bad day.

Policy makers and business interests clearly want to believe the “forty good years” part of that sentence, but choose to ignore the “one very bad day”!

Companies like Entergy claim that their nuclear plants are “safe”. What does this mean??? This means that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has reviewed 5% of that plant’s paperwork and checked off in boxes that the paperwork existed. However, those same companies did not tell you that the nuclear industry lobbying group has vetted every NRC Commissioner for the past twenty years before they allowed Congress to approve those Commissioners. And, did you know that those same lobbyists worked with the NRC to write those power plant regulations? So safe to Entergy and other nuclear power plant owners means that plants like Indian Point comply with the minimum acceptable criteria established by a compliant regulator.

Let’s talk specifically about the corporations that own nuclear power plants, especially merchant plants.

1. The NRC has allowed many nuclear power plants to become Limited Liability Corporations (LLCs): corporations that are separate from the companies that own them. Why is that an issue or concern to the rest of us?

1.1. Did you notice that Indian Point 2 is a separate LLC from Indian Point 3? Two entirely separate legal entities. Why is that? It allows the Entergy to keep one plant running if the other one has a serious radiation release. It allows one unit to be declared bankrupt, while the other units continue to generate cash that can’t be spent on the radiation cleanup.

1.2. Entergy wouldn’t do such a thing, would they? One only has to look at New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to see that Entergy has already used this legal maneuver. While the people of New Orleans where bailing out their city, Entergy’s New Orleans LLC subsidiary declared bankruptcy, and applied for federal disaster relief. The US government moved cash that had been destined to help New Orleans poor community through a Community Development Block Grant and gave it to Entergy. Entergy gave its executives bonuses.

2. What is the condition of these aging nuclear plants that have been operating 30 to 40-years and have reached the end of their design life?

2.1. According to the Indian Point Independent Safety Evaluation Report July 31, 2008: The physical condition of the plant …is visibly deficient… the care and maintenance of some other plant systems and structures do not meet the standards of high-performing plants… it is the Panel’s view that the maintenance and preservation of non-critical plant systems, equipment and structures is important, because it communicates to employees and the public alike the owner’s and operators’ commitment and professionalism. (Indian Point Independent Safety Evaluation Report July 31, 2008, page 11)

2.2. The Vermont Yankee Oversight Panel, convened by the State of Vermont, uncovered similar issues: “The issue of inadequate application of resources takes on heightened importance given Entergy’s status as an aging plant. Over the remainder of Entergy’s operating life, the possibility of shutdown within a few years can never be ruled out and will become a near certainty at some point. If the events of the last few years are any guide, Entergy has a tendency to focus expenditure on safety systems and systems of obvious reliability importance while withholding resources from systems that it deems of secondary reliability importance.” [Emphasis Added] “Limited resource allocation for non-safety systems might, therefore, be systemic within Entergy.”

2.3. Most recently, Entergy announced across the board staff cutbacks of five percent, euphemistically called its Human Capital Management Initiative. So, in spite of two independent panels determining that Entergy is not spending enough money, Entergy has decided to cut its staff at all of its aging and most vulnerable nuclear power reactors.

What you may ask is the NRC doing about this? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Instead, Neil Sheehan, the NRC Region 1 PR spokesperson said, “… the NRC has the ability to determine whether there are any adverse impacts through our Reactor Oversight process.” “If we observe any negative trends via inspection findings and/or performance indicators, we could determine if there was any linkage to human resource changes.”

To me, Sheehan’s quote says that after an accident, the NRC might determine that Entergy had cut too much staff.

For that matter, staff reductions have become the nuclear industry’s approach to make more money when electricity prices are down as they are now. The Millstone nuclear power plant in Connecticut “reduced staff to approach industry average”. The NRC allowed them to reduce staff. But if Millstone was above the industry average, then other plants must have been below the industry average. Why hasn’t the NRC approached those plants to increase the number of employees in order to measure up to the industry average? The industry only puts downward pressure on its reactor staffs, and the NRC is unwilling to put on the breaks.

Every day we at Fairewinds Energy Education receive questions asking us how American nuclear power plants compare with those that melted down at Fukushima Daiichi. Is Indian Point or Pilgrim really any different from Fukushima Daiichi? No! Actually both plants have many worse features:

Population centers are much closer to Indian Point and Pilgrim. And, before the Daiichi accident people believed that the emergency planning in Japan was far better than in US. Even Japan’s strong emergency plan failed because every safety system at Fukushima Daiichi failed.

The spent fuel pools at both Indian Point and Pilgrim holds five times more nuclear fuel that Fukushima Daiichi and they hold more cesium than all the atom bombs dropped in above ground testing. And, that is just cesium… think about all the other radioactive isotopes.

Indian Point and Pilgrim are the same age, first generation designs. Daiichi 1 started commercial operation in 1971 and had just received its authorization to run an additional 10 years only one month before the tsunami hit. Daiichi 2 started operation in 1974.

Fukushima Daiichi experienced an earthquake and tsunami, but what really knocked them out were the Loss of Offsite Power and the Loss of the Ultimate Heat Sink. Both could happen at Indian Point and Pilgrim. LoUHS can be created from a terrorist attack on the intake structure.

What about earthquake frequency? Indian Point has the highest probability of its nuclear core being damaged during an earthquake (core damage frequency) of any reactor in the US, according to the NRC by applying USGS seismic hazard curves. Experience at the North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia indicates that the frequency of a severe earthquake is grossly underestimated. The worst earthquake in 10,000 years was expected to be a Richter 6 at North Anna. Yet a Richter 6 happened in 30 years, meaning that the worst is yet to come. Indian Point has an earthquake fault one mile from the reactors that could easily create a quake greater than the plant was designed to withstand.

Let me sum this up. It is easy for the nuclear industry to allow arrogance to set in when one looks at the sheer size of a nuclear plant. I started my career in 1972 with a Master degree in nuclear engineering from RPI. The nuclear engineering department visited Indian Point when it was being completed. Both then and now, it is an impressive building. No one asks why does that building have to be so impressive? What is inside these plants that requires such an impressive structure in the first place?

But now that we have seen first hand that nuclear power safety systems can fail with catastrophic results, we need to ask why we should build such an uncontrollable and unmanageable technology. The forces within these plants are enormous, and must always be contained 24/7/365. Fukushima Daiichi, Chernobyl, and Three Mile Island proved just how utterly impossible it is to always contain these forces. One operator error or one significant weather event, or one earthquake or one terrorist attack, and all of New York City will face a very bad day, and like Japan, a very sad future.

Worse than Hiroshima - US war chemicals and stinking Hypocrisy

Source Video: Russia Today

One in three American servicemen permanently disabled, 'the worst genetic damage in any population ever studied', 'confirmed' US govt behind world record Afghan opium crop, and October's protest calendar. Seek truth from facts with Iraqi-Kurdish activist Houzan Mahmoud, Afghan war specialist Prof. Anatol Lieven, former intelligence officer Scott Rickard, Foreign Policy In Focus columnist Conn Hallinan, and the author of Questioning the War on Terror Dr. Kevin Barrett.

Full Transcript:

RT:My name's Daniel Bushell. Chemical agents are red lines except, critics say, when the US is using them on a far greater scale.

Announcer:

One in three US servicemen permanently disabled.

An explosion of birth defects they don't even have medical terms for.

And an FBI whistleblower ties America's drug epidemic to the highest levels of government.

Jeff Englehart, Iraq war veteran: White phosphorus was used which is definitely and without a shadow of a doubt a chemical weapon.

RT:US troops report orders to use white phosphorus in civilian areas.

The chemical nicknamed Whisky Pete by the US army is banned as a weapon. The Toxic Substances Agency notes it burns through eyes heart and bones of anyone in the vicinity.

Time after time officers in Iraq describe firing the chemical at people in a process they call shake 'n bake.

US army 2nd battalion, Field Artillery magazine: We fired shake ’n bake missions using white phosphorus to flush them out.

Darrin Mortenson, Embedded reporter, Iraq: Again and again, sending burning white phosphorus they call shake ’n bake into buildings.

RT:The documentary Fallujah, The Hidden Massacre says it's obtained this footage of US forces firing white phosphorus into residential homes.

After the attack the area, and anyone in it, has simply disappeared.

The Guardian reports the Pentagon lied and denied using white phosphorus as weapons until the evidence became overwhelming.

Houzan Mahmoud lived through US occupation of Iraq, Operation Desert Storm in 1991 as well as Saddam's chemical attack on Halabja in 1988.

Houzan joins us, thanks very much for coming on. When first did you find out about chemical weapons use?

Houzan Mamoud, Iraqi-Kurdish activist: I never knew the words chemical bomb until Halabja was hit in 1988. And let's not forget who sold these weapons to Saddam at the time, it was the western governments.

In 1991 when allied forces attacked Iraq they have used various weapons like depleted uranium and so on, followed by the 2003 occupation of Iraq.

People were turned into guinea pigs and that of course we can see the consequences many children are born deformed.

Western government comes and talks about human rights and democracy and not using this and that - I find it a very huge double morality.

RT:The highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied, radiation expert Christopher Busby has reported from US depleted uranium munitions in Iraq.

Birth defects worse than after the US nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Democracy Now reports, are being found in babies.

Doctors told renowned war correspondent Dahr Jamail such injuries have simply never been seen before.

Dahr Jamail, Al Jazeera: Malformations that she said they don’t even have medical terms for. It’s common now in Fallujah for newborns to come out with massive multiple systemic defects. Babies being born with two heads, babies being born with half of their internal organs outside of their bodies. And it is ongoing.

RT:The BBC notes the Pentagon's response to complaints from Iraq about depleted uranium attacks.

James Naughton, Munitions director, US army material command: They want it to go away because we kicked the c*** out of them.

RT:But that doesn’t explain, says Common Dreams Newscenter, the shocking numbers of US vets affected.

Of 697,000 US troops in the First Gulf War, the Department of Defense now admits nearly 250,000 are permanently disabled. From a battle that lasted just a hundred hours one in three troops hit, notes the Beyond Treason documentary, is a simply incredible figure.

Guardsman Gerard Darren Matthew's daughter was born with most of her hand missing and other deformities. He believes his service in Iraq is to blame. Independent tests on the veteran found high levels of depleted uranium in his body.

Some veterans who have gone to court have received admissions that their disabilities could only have been caused by U-238.

Doug Rokke was put in charge of DU cleanup after Operation Desert Storm.

The army was well aware of its toxicity, he says, not only in areas they hit, butfor anyone working with it, in the vicinity of DU, or even breathing downwind of uranium particles.

Yet he says no one was warned of its incredible danger.

Truthout notes Doug Rokke now has radiation damage to his lungs and kidneys, brain lesions and serious damage to his eyes.

Major Doug Rokke, US army veteran: The United States army common task training states very specifically uranium contamination will make food and water unusable. And yet we use it in combat all over the place. That’s why the United Nations’ Sub-commission on Human Rights had ruled that uranium munitions were an illegal weapon, because they're indiscriminate they can’t be cleaned up and they last for eternity.

Leuren Moret, International radiation specialist: The United States invaded Iraq and used weapons of mass destruction against the Iraqis. Depleted uranium has a half-life of 4.5 billion years. The Middle East, and Central Asia, and Yugoslavia, are contaminated forever.

RT:Tomorrow marks 12 years of the US-led bombing of Afghanistan, America's longest war.

The journal Military Medicine took samples from civilians in bombed areas and found concentrations of uranium higher by 8,000%.

This, claims the Afghan DU & Recovery Fund, is the result.

Investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald says the US establishment is systematically hiding horrors committed by its forces from the American people.

Official casualty lists in mainstream media don’t evenmention the Afghans or Iraqis; civilians who die simply don’t exist in corporate sites.

That's why, says the site Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting, the American public thinks just a few thousand civilians have been killed there.

Violent deaths from the invasion in Iraq, notes US-based organization Just Foreign Policy, is actually 1.5 million.

If you add those killed from Operation Desert Storm, followed by years of US sanctions, Countercurrents notes the 4.6 million matches the deaths from Nazi gas chambers.

Conn Hallinan writes for Foreign Policy In Focus, he joins us. Conn great to see you, how do we explain all this?

Conn Hallinan, Columnist, Foreign Policy In Focus: This American exceptionalism, 'Americans are better than everybody else, American democracy is better than any other democracy', even though we have one of lowest voting rates in the world for a major developed country, it also allows soldiers tokill people.

RT:Anatol Lievin's the West's leading authority on the Afghan war. He lived during the 1980s with the mujahedeen and has met with Northern Alliance, Taliban and key US generals since. In his latest book Pakistan: A Hard Country he speaks to the people in a region critical to this war.

Professor Lievin, thanks very much for joining us, did you get the impression US elites just don't care about casualties?

Anatol Lievin, Author of ‘Pakistan: A Hard Country’: Well certainly and even more serious than that in both Afghanistan and Iraq the United States don’t even count civilian casualties which really gives the impression they don’t give a damn.A senior American general said to me that America is not fighting any more to win in Afghanistan, the whole American effort is to avoid the impression of losing.

RT:FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds has claimed a more sinister financial incentive to continue a war generals say they can't win, and it involves a health catastrophe closer to home.

Production of opium since the US came in has taken off; Afghanistan now provides almost all the world's supply.

International calls to spray opium crops and end production, Reuters reports, are being blocked by the US government.

The huge increase in opioid consumption in the States, says the Center for Disease Control, is why an American now dies of drug abuse every 19 minutes.

Senior Pentagon sources confirmed to a Sunday Times investigation, Edmonds' revelations that US officials are fueling Afghan drug transport.

Fearing massive repercussions, the State Department, reports Ceasefire Magazine, put intense pressure on the Sunday Times, which pulled its correspondents off the four-part report.

Edmonds' evidence was eventually investigated by the Justice Department which, while keeping its findings classified, did admit crucially her findings were quote “supported”.

Let's speak to former intelligence officer Scott Rickard, great to have you on the show. First, how big is this problem?

Scott Rickard, Former intelligence officer: This country consumes 60% of the world's opiates, the stuff the Americans are basically hooked on. The oxycodone epidemic in Florida is out of control; you can’t imagine how many in my neighborhood have children and families that have been affected by the oxycodone epidemic.

RT:Yeah, who's profiting from this?

Rickard: So the Afghan farmer isn’t making as much, I mean he’s making the least amount. The real money comes in when it gets out of the country.

Daniel Hopsicker wrote a great book about the drug trade in Florida called Welcome to Terrorland instead of Welcome to Disneyland and it goes into the airfield where Mohamed Atta trained was a CIA operations field where they were flying in heroin.

You're talking about billions of dollars a year and the money that comes in, no one has to answer for it and it goes to the highest levels.

I asked John McCain a question in an institute meeting, I asked him 'What do you think about the amount of drugs that are coming out of Afghanistan making it into the streets of America?' He just said it's beneath him.

The Cocaine Cowboys documentary goes into complete detail around cocaine trade in the 70s and 80s. Seven times the deposits in Miami aloneof all the other Federal Reserve banks at the time was being laundered and deposited through the Federal Reserve in Miami so that should tell you something. It's a huge amount of money.

RT:The Justice Department says no one at HSBC will face trial for what Alternet calls massive drug money laundering and giving favored client status to known narcobarons.

An investigation in London's Observer newspaper goes further, claiming “the world's biggest drug money launderers are the City of London and Wall Street.”

The author of Questioning the War on Terror is Dr. Kevin Barrett, great to see you, what do you see as going on here?

Kevin Barrett, author of ‘Questioning the War on Terror’: The Taliban had stopped the opium crop; they’d shut down that business which took away a trillion dollars or so out of the coffers.

When the US invaded they just grabbed up all the opium lords and told them to plant and they had a bumper crop that set world records within a year or two.

And yes the Wall Street bankers are dependent on drug money laundering to keep their enterprises going. They're making all of these crazy gambles with derivatives. The estimates of the amount of derivatives floating around is in the hundreds of trillions, more than the real assets on earth, so this corrupt banking system is very vulnerable, and what they do is they leverage the drug profits.

RT:The State Department strenuously denies these claims. But in that case, asks leading terrorism analyst Nafeez Ahmed, why is it going to such extraordinary lengths to silence whistleblowers on this subject.

Critics say the case for illegal use of white phosphorus and depleted uranium appears more clear cut.

Alice Mahon quit as a Member of Parliament after 18 years, following the allied forces' official admission they used Mark 77 bombs containing white phosphorus on civilians.

Accusing other countries of using chemical weapons when you're doing so on a far greater scale, she says, “the hypocrisy is absolutely stinking.”

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has called on the Egyptian interim government to reopen the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip.

Hamas deputy foreign minister, Ghazi Hamed, said on Friday that some 1,200 people were using the crossing each day while the former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was in power but after he was removed by the military on 3 July the number fell to about 50 a day.

Egyptian officials closed the border crossing on August 19 after at least 25 policemen were killed in an ambush near the border by suspected militants.

He told state-run BBC that thousands of Palestinians, including students and medical patients, wanting to leave or enter Gaza have been stuck due to the closure of the key border crossing.

Rafah terminal is Gaza's sole gateway to the outside world bypassing Israel.

Many people in the blockaded coastal enclave avoid traveling through the Israeli controlled Erez crossing in northern Gaza.

Many of those stranded in Gaza stand to lose their jobs or their chances to obtain education in foreign countries because they overstayed in Gaza.

After Morsi's ouster the Egyptian military tightened the restriction in Rafah and created hardships for Gazans.

Observers say that the military -controlled government in Egypt has only more trouble in store for the 1.7 million people living in Gaza.

People here say that the closure of the Rafah crossing has increased their suffering and will leave them at the mercy of the Israeli-controlled crossing

Worse than Chernobyl - The inner threat of Fukushima crisis

Christopher Busby from the European Committee on Radiation Risks for RT

I recently pointed out, this operation has to go on forever - a long sickness, but at least not a sudden death. However, this week begins a new development in the potential sudden death department.

There is a curious and bizarre reversal of the natural at Fukushima: a looking-glass world inversion. Unlike the standard marine catastrophe, for example the Titanic, where the need is to manically pump water out of the ship to stop it sinking, at Fukushima the game is to madly pump water in, in order to stop it melting down and exploding.

Probably because it is now clear that the saturation of the ground from all the pumping water for cooling the several reactors and spent fuel pools has destabilized the foundations of the buildings, TEPCO is bringing forward its operation to try and deal with what is perhaps the most dangerous of the four sites, the spent fuel pond of Reactor 4. For this pond contains a truly enormous amount of radioactive material: 1,331 spent fuel grids amounting to 228.3 tons of Uranium and Plutonium buried inside a swimming pool which has already dried out once and exploded. That explosion blasted a significant, but unknown, quantity of lethally radioactive bits and pieces of fuel element around the site (where I heard they were bulldozed into the ground - who knows?), but it also blew the top off the building, covered the fuel elements under the water with rubble and pieces of crane machinery, and no doubt twisted and melted a large proportion of the remaining spent fuel.

The operation involves the kind of game that we are all familiar with in those machines in penny arcades. You know the ones. You stick in some coins. You have levers which manipulate a claw which you position over a teddy bear or a doll and then you let this down, pick the item up and drop it down a chute to win it. In the TEPCO version of this game, you build a crane over the spent fuel tank (or what’s left of it) and manoeuver a grab down into the rubble to deftly pick out a spent fuel assembly, like a 4.5meter long and 24cm square birdcage containing the zirconium metal clad fuel elements, each unit weighing about one third of a ton.

Of course, to make the game more interesting, they are not just sitting there like they were when the tank was being used. They are under water (sea water), covered in debris, corroded, busted, twisted, intertwined and generally impossible to deal with. And here is the really scary thing: if you manage to bust a fuel element, the best outcome is that huge amounts of radioactivity escape into the air and blow over Japan, just like before. The worst outcome is when two of these things get too close, perhaps because in pulling one out it breaks and falls against another one in the tank. Because then you suddenly have lots of fission, a lot of heat, a meltdown, possibly a big blast like before, and the destruction of the entire cooling pond. Or else the water boils off and the whole thing catches fire.

Then what happens? Not quite Armageddon, but as far as Japan is concerned, almost. I bet they have contingency plans to evacuate the northern island to Korea, China, anywhere. A lot of this radiation will end up in the USA, a long way downwind, admittedly, but then there is an awful lot of radioactivity involved.

Let me lead you through what the spent fuel pond of Reactor 4 contains in the way of radionuclides. I was taken to task after my last article for not listing enough of the radionuclide contaminants. So for the record, though some may find it boring, let me remedy that. It is an impressive list of lethal material:

Strontium-89, Strontium-90, Yttrium-90, Zirconium-95, Niobium-95, Ruthenium-106, Rhodium-106, Antimony-125, Iodine-131, Xenon-133, Caesium-137, Caesium-134, Cerium-144 (loads of this), Protoactinium-147, Europium-154, Plutonium-238, 239, 240, 241, Americium (Yes)-241 and 243, Curium-242,243,244, and of course Uranium 238,235 and 234.

These are the main ones. There are a lot more, and decay daughters of these also. It is a scary amount of invisible death. The total quantity of all these in the spent fuel pool of reactor 4 is about 1021Becquerels, if we leave out the noble gases and iodines maybe 1020(that is, 1 with 20 zeroes). Maybe 50 to 100 Chernobyl accidents worth, or more depending on what you believe came out of Chernobyl.

I list these because it should be made quite clear that the concentration of the media on the radio-caesiums and plutoniums and iodines is a very partial story. More discourse manipulation.

What lies within

Which brings me to another aspect of this grim piece of contemporary history. My expertise is in the health effects of internal radionuclides: what happens when these substances I list above get into human beings. Just after the Fukushima catastrophe I made a calculation and a prediction based on the scientific model of the European Committee on Radiation Risk (ECRR). I presentedit at the German Society for Radioprotection/ ECRR conference in Berlin in May 2011.

This showed that there would be some 200,000 extra cancers in roughly 10 million population in the 200km radius of the site in the next 10 years, and 400,000 over 50 years. The current risk model adhered to and employed by the Japanese government is that of the International Commission of Radiological Protection, the ICRP. This predicts that no detectable cancers will be seen as a result of the “very low doses” received by the population.

This photo taken on August 6, 2013 shows local government officials and nuclear experts inspecting a facility to prevent seeping of contamination water into the sea at Tokyo Electric Power's (TEPCO) Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant (Japan out AFP Photo / Japan Pool via JIJI Press)

It is this nonsense that allows them to say it is safe to live in contaminated areas so long as the annual “dose” is lower than about 20mSv and to refuse to evacuate the children from such places. The ECRR has predicted and explained all the increased rates of illness seen after the Chernobyl accident in the contaminated territories and of course predicts that the first effects will be increases in thyroid cancer in children, just like Chernobyl. But the ICRP and those employing its model deny there are such effects in Chernobyl: the problems there are due to vodka, radiophobia etc. Or that the children in Belarus who did develop thyroid cancer were iodine deficient. So in effect, Fukushima is a test of the two models. A test which has now begun.

It was reported recently that a survey of thyroid conditions in young people age 0-18 by Fukushima Medical University found 12 confirmed cases and 15 suspected cases of thyroid cancer in 178,000 individuals screened. This is in a two-year period. The 2005 Japanese national incidence rate for thyroid cancer aged 0-18 is given in a recent peer reviewed report as 0.0 per 100,000. That is to say there are no cases. Let me be generous and say that the annual rate per 100,000 is 0.05. That means in the last two years we would expect 0.18 cases: we actually see at minimum 12 cases but most likely 27 cases.

In epidemiology we calculate the excess risk as 27/0.18 which is 150 times the expected rate. Japan Times tells us “Researchers at Fukushima Medical University, which has been taking the leading role in the study, have said they do not believe the most recent cases are related to the nuclear crisis.” Right, that’s OK then. This must have been a random cluster, unluckily, but coincidentally near Fukushima, a source of radioiodine which is a known cause of thyroid cancer.

The risk model

The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, UNSCEAR would agree. Also the World Health Organization (since 1959 part of the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] as far as research into radiation and health is concerned). In its preliminary report on Fukushima Health effects, issued in 2012, it states that the maximum thyroid dose was 35mSv and that most received a lot less. On the basis of the ICRP model you would not expect (says radiation and health supremo Dr. Wolfgang Weiss) to see what is clearly happening: an accelerating thyroid cancer epidemic, worse than and earlier than the Chernobyl thyroid cancer epidemic.

It is one more piece of evidence that the current ICRP risk model, employed by the Japanese (and all other world governments) is totally wrong and unsafe and must urgently be abandoned. Internal radiation exposure, as the ECRR approach shows, cannot be assessed by the simple concept of ‘Absorbed Dose’. For those who want a more technical explanation you can see my recent article.

I met Weiss in 2011 at a conference of radiation research in Paris which he was running. At this MELODI conference I took the microphone and told the 650 delegates that the ICRP model was dead in the water and its use continued to kill the people it was intended to protect. I was pursued up the aisle by the Chair, Dr. Sisko Salomaa (of the Finnish Radiation Protection organization STUK), to wrestle the microphone away from the dangerous lunatic Busby

But Weiss, Salomaa, and the other radiation agency apparatchiks well know that the ICRP and the other global radiation protection agencies UNSCEAR, IAEA and WHO are run by people (like themselves) who are not experts on internal radiation pollution and health, and rarely have any real hands-on research expertise. They rely exclusively on the Hiroshima bomb studies which ignored internal radiation, the black rain of uranium that affected the controls outside the city and the control entrants after the bomb.

I have checked out their research publications: it is just the case. Ask them. Their job has been - and still is - to protect, not the public, but the nuclear industry and the military. After Chernobyl, some of them turned up in Kiev when I was there in 2000 and talked down the effects of the radiation. Watch them in action here. By 2005, these Chernobyl cancer effects were turning up in Europe. One study in Sweden by Martin Tondel found an 11 percent excess cancer risk for every 100kBq/sq metre of caesium-137 contamination. Tondel was swiftly dealt with by his boss, Lars Erik Holm, one-time head of ICRP and now Medical Officer of Health of Sweden (Yes).

Again and again, these agencies and their spokespersons have denied what was in front of their very eyes. Billions of dollars are poured into cancer research, research on radiation, but any attempt to carry out epidemiological studies of those exposed to internal radiation, from depleted uranium in Iraq, to Chernobyl contamination, to the shores of the massively-contaminated Baltic Sea have been turned down for funding. I know. I applied with colleagues from Latvia Technical University and from the Karolinska Institute to look at cancer on the shores of the Baltic; no way were we going to be allowed to even get the data, let alone be funded.

As more evidence emerges from this ghastly inadvertent Fukushima experiment, we will see more and more that we have governments and radiation agencies who are wielding unsafe and incorrect scientific assessments of reality. Additionally, we have what might become one of the most serious global public health events of human history being overseen by a private profit-making company, TEPCO, with no good track record of competence or believability.

And appropriately, in this looking-glass world, in a bizarre echo of these two inversions of justice and democracy, we have a sinking ship that can only be saved by pumping water into it.

What are we going to do with these people who have let us down, who are letting us down? They all should be put into a court and tried and sent to jail for what are effectively war crimes, in this new war, the invisible genetic poisoning of the planet and its innocent inhabitants.
